Pet Grooming Tips For Beginners

Many pet owners find it very convenient and cost efficient to groom their pets at home instead of engaging professional pet grooming services. For those of you who are interested in grooming your pet yourself at home but are not too sure how to go about doing it, you can check out these few tips below to help you embark more easily on pet grooming your pet yourself.

First of all, make sure you have the right tools, accessories and supplies for grooming your pet. This is especially important if you have many different types of pets at home. For example if you have a dog and cat at home, do not use the brush used for brushing your cat on your dog. This is very unhygienic as well as inappropriate way to misuse your grooming brush. Make sure you use different grooming brush for your cat and dog. Essential tools includes grooming brush, grooming shampoo, grooming comb, grooming scissors, hair dryer and last but not least a nail clippers.

Next, choose the right brush for your pet’s coat type. For example, if you have a pet with a fluffy coat, it is essential to get a paddle brush to keep that fluffiness. Likewise, if you have a pet with a finer coat, get a brush that is for more sensitive use. Remember, do not misuse the brush as in tip above, thinking you can save a few bucks by fully utilizing the grooming brush.

Selecting the right shampoo for your pet is also another important point that you should take note of. Many pet owners thinks that pet grooming is as simple as just shampooing and washing their pet using normal shampoo but nothing can be further from the truth. Animals are sensitive to shampoo made for humans. To prevent skin and coat irritation to your pet, make sure you choose a pet shampoo that is suitable for the kind of skin that your pet has.

Another point to take note for the inexperienced pet groomer is to find a proper place to groom your pet. The obvious choice is to go for the toilet. However, if you are not able to do so, find an enclosed area that can be easily clean up after each pet grooming session. Failure to lock in or enclose your pet will result in a wet per running all over your house and messing up your home.

However, if you are going to groom a big dog which cannot be fit inside a small bathtub, try taking it out to the backyard for the grooming session. This can only be done during the warmer months. Do not try it cold weather or it can seriously affect the health of your dog.

Last but not least, you need to have patience when grooming your pet. This is especially so for first timers new to grooming your own pets. You may not know how to handle your pet initially but with patience, your pet and you will learn to bond better and enjoy the grooming sessions together.

5 Simple Tips to Groom Your Pet and Save a Few Bills

Are you on a tight budget and still you want a grooming session for your dog? Then shed your worries here as there are a few dog grooming tips to follow to groom your furry kid and save money. Every pet parent must have faced this situation and this is not the worst situation. Since grooming charges are too high, it is better that you learn some basic steps to groom your pet at home, especially if you have a large pug family. With these few simple tips, you can do a great job as well as can pamper your dog giving a spa like treat.

Brush

Every grooming session needs to be started by brushing. With the help of a dog comb gently remove all debris and untangle the hair, also find all hair knots that need to cut off. Through brushing, you will come to know that which part of your dog body requires more attention. Like hair on the belly, rather than hair on their head and legs. Moreover, many dogs have more hair around the ears.

It is also crucial to find a perfect brush according to your pet’s requirement because long hair requires special brushes that detangles easily. Even the thick hair requires the brush that can move through it effortlessly, and helps in easy brushing and detangling hair. Ensure that you are not harsh on your pet. Gently comb through his hair.

Bathe

After brushing your pet, the next in the grooming session comes bathing. Numerous dog shampoos are available in the market. In case, if your pet has fleas, select Fido’s flea shampoo, which is very much helpful in both cleaning the pet and removing the fleas. If your dog is allergic to any chemical, you need to check for the ingredients on that pet shampoo bottle before using it on your pet.

Bathe your furry pal in a lukewarm water. Make sure that the water is not too hot as it may burn your pooch. While bathing take care that the water and shampoo does not go into his eyes, ears and mouth. After shampoo, use pet conditioner on your pooch. This enhances his coat sheen and leaves the hair silky. After washing and conditioning, pat dry your dog with the help of clean towel. Get a proper dog towel for your lovable four-pawed companion.

Use Special Grooming Scissors

Never try your hand on your furry pal, if you are not handy with scissors because it is quite risky. You may even hurt your pet. Better to take him to a professional groomer to do the job. If you have a little bit of experience, then get a pair of special grooming scissors. Never work out with general scissors. You can buy a pair of grooming scissors from a store or any online pet store. While cutting be careful around the eyes, ears, belly, bottom, toes and other tender regions.

Clean the Mess

If you don’t want that dog hair on your furniture, sticking to your clothes, on the carpet or flying around the house, just clean the mess after you have finished cutting the hair. This may seem quite obvious, but most often pet parents forget about this and walk through the hair taking it all around the house.

Reward

Every dog trainer and experienced groomer know that a small treat after the job done is well appreciated by a furry pal. Giving a treat after a grooming session will encourage them to remain calm and love the bath time. A hug or a kiss, or any of their favorite treat will tell them that they have done a great job.

Definitely grooming at home takes a time to practice, but it is an effective way to save some bucks and help your pet enjoy his grooming session. However, it is always good when you do this by yourself rather than giving away your pet in a stranger’s hand.

DIY All Natural Dog Shampoo

Once I learned about the health benefits of essential oils, I started changing my world immediately. Not only are all the products we use for ourselves and our families riddled with hazardous chemicals but so are most all of the products available for your pet! After all if something will harm us humans after 10-15 years of continuous use, who cares about whether or not it will harm your dog? Most dogs have a life span that doesn’t last much longer than 10 years or so anyway, right? Well, in my opinion, NO, that’s WRONG and it is NO reason to subject our pets to harmful chemical products. Shampoos, skin and coat care products and flea and tick repellents are among the worst. And yet it is very easy to make your own natural and safe products that can clean your pet and offer protection from bugs and critters.

My dogs travel between Arizona and Wyoming. Since both climates are dry, skin issues are common. Although fleas are not a real problem, I prefer not to take risks with a flea infestation. Ticks, flies and mosquitoes on the other hand can be problematic. The use of essential oils in a DIY Pet Shampoo safeguards my guys from these pests. In addition the use of the proper oils in the shampoo can be good for the coat.

The shampoo recipe I use for my dogs is:

3 tbls All Natural Castile Soap
3 tbls Coconut Milk
2 tbls Aloe Vera
6 oz Distilled Water
1 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
2 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil
2 drops of Citronella Essential Oil
2 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
2 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

Place all this in a clean bottle, shake well before each use. Apply enough for a good lather. If possible let set on the coat for a few minutes before rinsing off. Make this in small batches as the coconut milk is perishable. You can also leave out the coconut milk. As well take it easy with the Peppermint. I know everyone loves the smell but… Peppermint is a deterrent for bugs, spiders especially are driven away by the smell. You don’t want the smell on your dog’s coat so strong it bothers him or her. It is also known to help with constipation. Too strong a scent could produce undesirable bowel movements!

If you have trouble rinsing out the shampoo or it leaves the coat a little too oily, use this clear rinse formula:

1 cup distilled water
3 tbls apple cider vinegar
1 drop Cedarwood
1 drop Citronella
1 drop Eucalyptus
1 drop Lavender
1 drop Peppermint
1 drop Rosemary

For real dry or itchy skin problems you can also add Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree Oil). Be certain to avoid getting either product in the eyes or in the ears. If you get this in the eyes, rinse with a good vegetable oil such as olive or grapeseed. Do NOT rinse the eyes with water. Water will drive the oils deeper in to the tissue causing more discomfort.

Since one method of application for essential oils with pets is through topical application, you can also add other beneficial oils to your shampoo mixture. For instance, when dealing with emotional problems besides diffusing the appropriate oils for your pet’s condition, you can add them to your shampoo. I have one Chihuahua with a collapsing trachea. For him I diffuse Copaiba and an essential oil blend known as RC. He also receives an oral diluted dose twice daily of the Copaiba and I have added it to his shampoo.

For our other Chihuahua who doesn’t like being alone, I move my bedroom diffuser close to their pen we keep them in when we are out of the house for extended periods of time (4+ hours). I use a variety of combinations such as the common blends of Acceptance, Peace & Calming, Stress Away, even Valor. Single oils I use in combination with the blends are Frankincense, Grapefruit, Lavender and Ylang Ylang. This seems to keep his stress level down while were gone which in turn makes are arrival back home a bit less exciting and hectic as well! For him I add Stress Away to his shampoo blend as an extra boost.

There are so many ways essential oils can help you help your pet in a natural and safe manner. Change your life, and change your pet’s life, for the better! Remember, the market for adulterated oils is large and encompasses most all oils since everyone wants to make a buck. Find a company who can detail for the consumer the process from seed to seal that is used to ensure the highest quality products. A little goes a LONG WAYS. Spend the money up front for high quality oils and they will last much longer and provide a safe and happy experience.
